Journals can be blank or lined.  My favourite journal format is the long stitch (top left) as no matter where the book is opened, it lays flat making it perfect for journaling or sketching.  But I also make traditional case bound books (hard covers) and books for journaling or sketching with wooden covers and wooden spines.
